Herons, egrets, ibis, anhingas, plus alligators, snakes, and many other creatures can easily be found and photographed along the remote trails and public boardwalks in the Everglades, our third-largest national park. The Seminole Indians called the area Pahay-okee or grassy waters. Thousands of small, raised islands or "hammocks" (an indian word) dot the landscape.
These small, dense forests of tropical hardwood, palms, vines, ferns, mosses, and orchids are only a few inches above the high waterlevel of the 'glades. They are home to a great variety of vertebrate and invertebrate animals from tree snails to white-tailed deer and even the very rare and endangered Florida panther.
