Located one hundred miles south of the Grand Canyon and one hundred miles northwest of Phoenix, the city of Prescott sits in the center of the state of Arizona, in a mile-high wooded basin in the middle of the largest ponderosa pine forest in America.
The main attractions here for photographers are the Granite Dells. Thousands of weathered granite boulders are stacked along Granite Creek, creating an incredible landscape of balancing stones. Many of these stones are fractured vertically and appear to be balancing. Concentrations of these balancing boulders are located at the north end of Watson Lake, created in 1916 when Granite Creek was dammed to create a reservoir to provide irrigation for agricultural projects in the Chino Valley to the north of Prescott. The area at the north end of Watson Lake is called the Granite Dells. |
