California State Route 49 is a north-south highway that winds along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada range, passing through historic mining communities established during the 1849 California gold rush. In addition to all the ghost towns and fascinating historical relics, Highway 49 offers great images for photographers. Miles of rolling green foothills in the spring are dotted with oaks and piƱon pines along the southern part of the highway.

California State Route 49 is a north-south highway that winds along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada range, passing through historic mining communities established during the 1849 California gold rush. James Marshall, sawmill operator for Sutter’s Mill, discovered gold in a lumber mill tailrace in Coloma in January 1848. It took a year for the news to reach the East Coast and start the rush of thousands of gold-hungry prospectors from all over the world. Highway 49 was named for the “49ers.”

In addition to all the ghost towns and fascinating historical relics, Highway 49 offers great images for photographers. Miles of rolling green foothills in the spring are dotted with oaks and piñon pines along the southern part of the highway. Farther north, the road climbs into ponderosa pine forests along white water streams at elevations of over six thousand feet.
