Snow Canyon, eight miles northwest of St. George, Utah, is a 7,400-acre state park created in 1962 to protect the endangered desert tortoise and fourteen other sensitive species including Gila monsters, peregrine falcons and canyon tree frogs. Snow Canyon State Park is a refuge for endangered desert wildlife in a geologically fascinating landscape. Except for the petrified sand dunes, the thirty-eight miles of trails in this park have signs warning hikers to stay on the marked trails–no cross-country wandering and no walking on wildlife burrows.

Snow Canyon can be a weeklong destination for some serious desert photography or a quick photo stop on your way to Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon’s North Rim. In the spring, desert wildflowers grow along the trails. Mid-April is a good time for macro photography here. Close-ups can be photographed with a longer macro lens without leaving the trails. Summer days in this park can reach over 100˚F. Late summer brings monsoon weather up from the Gulf of Mexico with dramatic stormy skies over the Southwest.
