Until recently, when I wanted to photograph autumn color, I traveled east to New England. This year, I packed my camera gear into my 4Runner and headed into the Sierra Nevada Range, a two-hour drive from my house. In the past, I have searched for autumn color by driving the length of Highway 395, one of California’s most scenic routes along the east side of the Sierra.

This year I went looking for autumn color along two of the most scenic, narrow, steep and winding roads over some of the highest peaks that line the Sierra Nevada Range. This report is about finding more interesting routes to the color.
