I recently traveled to southern New Mexico with a plan to work my way up the west side of the state while photographing ghost towns. Most of the mining for valuable minerals occurred over a hundred years ago. Some very successful mines in Southwest New Mexico drew thousands of prospective prospectors to the area in the mid-1800s. Silver, gold, copper, zinc and even iron were worth the effort when all you needed was a pick, a shovel, and a burro. If you could survive the heat and avoid the Apaches, you could, hopefully, become a millionaire.
