When weather conditions cooperate, spring wildflowers carpet the Texas Hill Country near Austin. I've heard that everything is bigger in Texas and on my trip, this proved true; I'd never seen so many wildflowers. Some patches of bluebonnets spread for more than a mile along the roads. Some patches started at the edge of the pavement, grew beneath the barb wire fences and covered whole ranches, with the deep blue color of bluebonnets disappearing into the distant hills.
Near the town of Burnet, Texas, I saw a solid mass of red paintbrush that covered at least one square mile.
