Many of my previous photo trips to Utah concentrated on red rock desert locations with bizarre geological formations, sand dunes, and cacti. For this newsletter (132 - Autumn in Utah's Wasatch Range), I traveled to northern Utah’s Wasatch Range on the western edge of the Colorado Plateau, the boundary between the Rocky Mountains and the Great Basin Desert. Late September usually brings the peak of fall color to these mountains east of Salt Lake City where canyon roads climb into evergreen forests and through groves of aspen painted in shades of orange and yellow, from late September into early October. I stayed until the first snow fell.
One of my favorite places to photograph on the Marin Coast is the fascinating Cypress Tree Tunnel at Point Reyes National Seashore. This landmark in issue #087 - Point Reyes in Winter, California is located 30 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, off Sir Francis Drake road on the way to The Point Reyes Lighthouse. The tunnel, leading to the the Marconi Radio station, is formed by Monterey Cypress trees planted in 1930. You can photograph the tree tunnel all year round. Evergreen trees do not shed needles with seasonal changes. The building at the west end of the tunnel is the Marconi Radio Station. In 1923 Guglielmo Marconi developed a short-wave radio system that was not only useful for better long distance communication, but also guided ships into port in dense fog. The station was retired in the late 1900s but still transmits on weekends. I used a 10 mm lens to capture the full height and the wide-angle spread across the driveway in morning light.
Peggy’s Cove Nova Scotia - Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse sits at the edge of the most colorful fishing harbor in Nova Scotia. My newsletter issue #026 - The Coast of Nova Scotia guides you to Peggy’s Cove and many more harbor scenes. A map pinpoints remote beaches, lighthouses, and places for the best photography on Cape Breton and along the Lighthouse Trail. Photograph fishing boats anchored in secluded coves, moose wading in French Lake, and sunsets on the Bay of Fundy. This newsletter describes a photo exploration of the Lighthouse Coast, starting in Yarmouth, north to the tip of Cape Breton. Details on the auto ferry from Bar Harbor, Maine, to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, are included.
